Goal 7:  Waste and Asset Management

Target 7.2: Green Procurement

As of April 1, 2014, the Government of Canada will continue to take action to embed environmental considerations into public procurement, in accordance with the federal Policy on Green Procurement.

Scope and Context

The Supreme Court of Canada procures over $5M in goods and services per year, in several commodity categories.  Although greening of our procurement can be integrated throughout our activities, the Supreme Court of Canada is focusing on three prospective areas of greening its procurement:  toners and cartridges, office supplies and office furniture.

Target 7.3: Sustainable Workplace Operations

As of April 1, 2015, the Government of Canada will update and adopt policies and practices to improve the sustainability of its workplace operations.

Scope and Context

Although the Supreme Court of Canada is a non-FSDS department and is therefore not obligated to implement this target, it has implemented some initiatives aimed at improving the sustainability of its workplace operations.

Removal of local printers:

By March 31, 2015, the SCC will develop and implement a phased approach to reduce the number of local printers

The SCC is constantly looking at ways to remove local printers and promote the use of network printing devices.

Automatic shutdown of workstations:

By March 31, 2015, the SCC will develop and implement a phased approach to shutdown workstations left powered.

Shutdown schedules are in place that covers the majority of the workstations.

Reduce consumption of virgin paper:

Increase the use of recycled paper for non-court related sectors by March 31, 2015.

Packaging and box returns:

Boxes and packaging are returned to furniture suppliers for re-use.  Plans are to increase this by March 31, 2015 by encouraging the return of packaging material to our supplier (s) of office supplies.

Electronic Waste strategy:

SCC follows PWGSC Electronic Waste Strategy for disposal of surplus electronic and electrical equipment (EEE) through programs such as Computers for Schools (CSF) and Crown Assets Distribution Directorate (CADD).

The SCC continues to use the services of PWGSC Electronic Waste system for disposal of surplus equipment.
