Hearings at the SCC during the pandemic
Due to the pandemic, the Supreme Court Building was closed to visitors. Starting in October 2022, we will begin a gradual reopening allowing a limited number of members of the public and media to observe an appeal hearing and/or conduct business with the Registry Branch.
The Main Courtroom was adapted to permit the Justices to hear appeals together safely. There are now two benches so that there is greater distance between the Justices. As well, Plexiglas dividers have been installed wherever it is not possible to maintain a safe distance between participants. Since the start of the pandemic, most counsel have been appearing before the Court via Zoom, with hearings being livestreamed as per the Court’s usual practice.
