Summary

Case summaries are prepared by the Office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Canada (Law Branch). Please note that summaries are not provided to the Judges of the Court. They are placed on the Court file and website for information purposes only.

The applicant admitted shooting the victim, and stabbing his uncle, but argued that he did not have the specific intent for murder because he was intoxicated by sniffing gasoline. At trial, the applicant testified in the Inuktitut language using the services of a trained translator. The first interpreter was replaced, on consent, with another who was more experienced with the applicant’s dialect. The applicant was convicted of first degree murder, and aggravated assault. His conviction appeal was dismissed.
